Since late 2022, when ChatGPT was released, educators have been scrambling. Where does artificial intelligence (AI) fit in education? How should we use it, and how shouldn't we? Matt Miller -- speaker, author, and founder of Ditch That Textbook -- recently returned to the classroom to teach in the new world of generative artificial intelligence. In this session, he'll share where he and his students found success with AI, where he avoided using it, and the big-picture takeaways you can apply from each.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the general concepts of artificial intelligence as they apply to the K-12 setting.
  • Discover how large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT can be used effectively for teaching and learning in the classroom.
  • Explore the implications of LLM use in the classroom and situations that they might want to avoid.
  • Learn about AI image generators and how they can be used to engage students in meaningful learning.
  • Find out about other AI tools -- and ways to use them -- that can be implemented in the classroom in practical ways.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This seminar is applicable to K-12 educators. Most relevant examples will be for 6-12 teachers in humanities subjects (English, social studies, languages, etc.) but examples can be adapted for most subject areas and grade levels. Open-minded post-secondary faculty will likely find this session practical and implementable, too.
